I have assigned my students a unique ID that can be placed on their assignments. I would like to collect their assignments, batch scan them to PDF, and have MS ACCESS 2013 update/append each individual record with a link to the new files. I would only scan one assignment at a time so there would not be a duplicate record per batch. However, I may scan multiple items a day.

Thank you for your support. This isn't very easy. A scanned image, whether in a graphics format such as.jpg or in a.pdf file, is just that; it's not letters and numbers, it's an image - a picture of data, not data itself. You will need to use Optical Character Recognition to convert the pixels of the image to text, and then (nontrivial) VBA code to parse that text into fields in your table. This is doubly complex if (as seems likely) the users handwrite the answers to their assignments; OCR has gotten really good lately but if you're trying to read particularly bad handwriting (mine for example) there will be lots and lots of errors.

DbPix was designed to work seamlessly with Microsoft Access, allowing you to handle images efficiently and just as easily as other data types. Getting started is as simple as placing a dbPix control on a form and choosing the data source.

If all you want to do is store and categorize images of the scanned assignments, that's a bit easier but correspondingly less useful. You can't automate grading of a picture. It depends exactly what you are trying to do here. Your description is not very clear. For example, if you want to scan their completed assignments and link the scanned file to their record in a database this is fairly easy. If the assignments are tests and you want to scan a document to record the answers to questions, that would require a standardized form and special software.

So you need to explain in further detail, what you are trying to do. If its what I said about linking, then name each PDF with their StudentID and an AssignmentID.

For example: 1234-A56.PDF If you want to open that PDF, you can generate the file path by concatenating the folder with StudentID and AssignmentID. Hope this helps, Scott Blog: Microsoft Access MVP since 2007.
