It took me two weeks and a few emails to Adobe tech support to get the matter sorted.

Since I am no longer a student, I’ve decided that I simply cannot afford CS4. Thus, I am looking at OpenSource alternatives. After a bit of digging, I am happy to report that I found one. A very good one, actually. The SVN version of Scribus can do much of what InDesign can. (Unfotunately, it hasn’t been released as packaged binaries, but it looks like it will be out soon.) It’s easy to use and works well with both GIMP and Inkscape (the Photoshop and Illustrator of Open Source).

I’ve been able to replicate all of the same effects that I use in InDesign without much difficulty. Now that I’ve figured out the interface, I think it’s actually easier to use than InDesign. It’s more open to experimentation. Finding Scribus has made be breathe a sigh of relief. When my version of CS3 refuses to run, I have a backup that will still allow me to work the way I want to. That’s important. Even better, it’s cross platform with Linux, Mac and Windows versions.

Ubuntu even includes the latest SVN version in their repositories; thus, for those people, installation is a one-click affair. I thought that you and your readers might be interested.
