, I believe NASA will not work like the politician does even if they spend a lot. I know 1DxII is great, even if I haven't even touch one! But my comment is on the choice of D850. Same goes for A9 I believe, on the battery and heating (the sensor must remain active all the time as there is no mirror/separate focusing module).

But yes, D850, if the practical use proves true, I believe it'll be a great one to take it up. NASA only uses Canon gear for shooting video. They have tons of EOS Cinema cameras ranging from more than at least 3 Canon EOS C700، more than ten C300 II units, many 1DC units, XC10 and XC15 units, all for capturing 4K video in space. They use Canon photography lenses ranging from 10-18mm EF-S lenses on the Cinema cameras with S35 size sensors (700 and 300ii) to high-end popular L primes and zooms, and Canon CN-E zooms with servo all with unlimited-range satellite wireless follow-focus systems and custom SSDs for direct capture and storage of 4K RAW footage from the EOS C700 units and 4K MJPEG footage from the EOS 1D-C units.

Since their photographers/videographers already lie in a Nikon Eco System with probably millions of dollars worth of photographic gear for Nikon, it makes since to use the highest end Nikon. Very simple choice I assume. I bet they didn't analyze the matter as much as our dpreview astrophysicst commenters have. It's just the highest end camera from Nikon for god's sake:D simple as that. Not to mention the awesome camera being rugged as hell which is their first priority above all (if they had Canon gear partnership they'd use 1DxIIs) and the D5 does everything they want such as incredible easy automated time lapse and very high qualiy high ISO photographs in the dark and huge shutter mechanism wear out accuations. Lovely camera. Which I had one as I always wanted to try the S35/APS-C 4K video from a Nikon camera.

So NASA technically uses Nikon, Canon and Sony cameras and lenses. Any fan boys should calm down.
