Spartacus: Gods of the Arena starts off with a simple recap of the impressive finale of Spartacus:Blood and Sand,'Kill them All'. Gods of the Arena is the story of how the house of Batiatus, gained prominence and rose to the position it had in Blood and Sand.John Hannah reprises his role as a younger Batiatus. Still his swearing, conniving self, his was one of the most well etched out characters from the first season.Giving him company is the younger looking Lucy Lawless,as Lucretia. Both of them,as,in the first season, power hungry and looking to gain favor in the eyes of officials by any means possible to garner favor for their house which has just happened to come under their control.Bataiatus seeks to pursue a more'aggressive' attitude in matters concerning the ludus as opposed to his father.
Oregon scientific i600 software. We are also introduced to the new additions this season. The heavy drinking-womanizing-gladiator Gannicus, played by Dustin Claire. Fan favorite Doctore from first season is back as well along with Ashur. Gaia(Lila from 'Dexter'),played by Jaime Murray is also introduced in this episode.
This season seeks to dwell upon the rise of the house of Batiatus along with the first Champion of Capua in the form of Gannicus, while the politics surrounding the bloody sport provide a tantalizing setting for another season of gratuitous sex, over the top violence, cringe worthy language which has made the first season achieve near-cult status among its legion of faithful fans. My Score - 8/10.
While I enjoyed 'Past Transgressions', ' presents us with a who has been bruised, beaten and ready to bounce back. The Batiatus we loved to hate in Blood and Sand is born and his scheme to get revenge and steal an opportunity right out from under his competitors is devilishly planned out and executed. Batiatus was quite literally a man on a mission. Not floundering in the wake of his beating at the hands of Tullius, Batiatus hatches a complex scheme to get his revenge whilst also placing his own gladiators in good standing.
It's a lot of fun watching Batiatus play out his Mission: Impossible style scheme. There are a lot of times when his plan is on the brink of disaster thanks to Gaia's own interests and I was right there with Baitatus, hoping she wouldn't screw it all up. Batiatus ranks with the likes of J.R. Ewing, Linus and as devious bastards I like to see win.
In the end, things go Batiatus' way and I couldn't be happier. The friendship between and Oenomaus was expanded on this week with a key bit of forshadowing thrown in by Oenomaus' wife Melitta. Her hint that Gannicus may one day face a situation that he simply can't laugh away came back to haunt all of them in the final act. Gannicus' claim that he would simply f**k his way out of a situation literally became true and no one was smiling or laughing in the end. It's astounding, and a testament to the ability of the writing team, that the relationship between Gannicus, Oenomaus and his wife Melitta already exudes so much emotion when put to the test. In only two episodes we've been introduced to these characters and already I feel for their respective situations as they are all forced to do something that is breaking their heart.
