ESXi: How to find HBA/NIC driver/Firmware version Allan Kjaer May 25, 2016 Dec 18, 2018 I have seen some problems when running the wrong driver version against firmware version, so here is a guide how to find the information you need to check compatability on ESXI 5.x and 6.0. ESXi 5.5 introduces a new Native Device Driver Architecture Part 2 by William Lam 1 Comment Following up from Part 1 where I provided an overview of the new Native Device Driver architecture introduced in ESXi 5.5, we will now take a deeper look at how this new device driver model works in ESXi.
My homelab consists of 3 whitebox hosts that I recently upgraded from 6.0 to 6.5. Local storage in each is provided by an IBM M5015 (LSI 9260-8i) but they boot from USB flash drives. I have a Windows 2012R2 guest running the latest LSI Megaraid Storage Manager for monitoring the controller and drive health. MSM was able to discover and manage the controller in each host just fine in 6.0 but since the upgrade to 6.5 it will not discover any of them.
I have done much searching and troubleshooting but have not made any progress other than if I do a fresh install of 6.5 on a new flash drive that same MSM will discover them correctly. After updating the drivers and installing the provider of course. A non-inclusive unordered list of what I have checked or done: • The local web client on each host does show all the proper items under Monitor -> Hardware -> Storage. • sfcbd-watchdog is running. • Disable/enable CIM agent (esxcli system wbem set --enable false and then esxcli system wbem set --enable true) • Disabled both the ESXi and Windows guest's firewall • Made static host entries for my hosts inside the Windows guest.
• After updating drivers and the SIMS provider I did a line by line comparison of the installed VIB versions between the fresh install and the existing install. • Screamed/yelled/cursed/headdesk (this one has been repeated multiple times) Does anyone have suggestions on anything to try before I just re-install the hosts?
